We all know we have problems in education!!! We are circling the same problems by doing what we have always done (incremental changes; raising standards)
- re: No Child Left Behind to make up for PISA rankings
Every country is trying to reform public education (but they're trying to meet the future while doing what they did in the past)
Two Questions (Purposes of Education) to Think About:
- Economic: How do we educate our children to get jobs in the future? (even though we don't know what jobs will exist in the future)
- Cultural: How do we pass on cultural identity (while preparing for globalization)?
- this ties into patriotism (who are "we" ?)
Kids no longer know what the purpose of education is, because the old narrative no longer rings true. In the past, if you worked hard and got a college degree, you'd get a job. There is no longer this guarantee.
ok so...
- What should the new narrative be?
- What do we want the purpose of school to be (what are schools' OKRs?) and how do we measure success?
- Okay, we know we want schools to achieve — how do we convince students that this is the narrative? What's the marketing?
Current system was designed for a different age: Enlightenment (cultural view) & Industrial Revolution (economic driver)
- previously, public education (as we know it: compulsory; free to everyone) was not a thing
- even this premise was controversial (yes, we don't do this right now, but even this basic premise was up for argument)
- many said working class children were incapable of reading/writing & believed going to school would not benefit "them"
