- "bliss point" - the percentage of a school that needs to be white before most white parents would consider sending their children to that school
- in SIS, it was 26% (at least a quarter!!)
- in order for white parents to transfer to the school —> they had to take communal action (no one wants to be on their own; so they make the move together or don't at all)
- nature of a nonprofit: it's a moral decision to put the money towards what the donor intended for it to go to
- contradicts the system of a PTA — a democracy where every parent gets a say
- if PTA wants the money to go towards highest need / they change their mind —> instability for a donor (discourages them from donating)
- ends up benefitting the new wealthy kids' programs
- PTA raises money for after school programs; extracurricular events
- wealth gap: $200k for one majority white elementary vs $2k for a majority minority district
- on the dual french program:
- one young girl starts to develop ideas about the superiority of french over arabic (10% of school knows arabic) —> starts to become an internalized inferiority (re: linguistic hegemony)
- her new friends are teaching her / correcting her / sidelining her
- the program is an after school program —> already inequities there
- languages are intertwined with people's identities!!!!! this is dangerous!!!!!!
- new kids feel as if they are "white saviors" turning this bad school around
